Le Pádraig Mac Suibhne



Rugadh Pádraig Mac Suibhne in Ard an Rátha
in nDún na nGall- Padraig Mac Suibhne was
born in Ardragh in Donegal
Bhain sé céim amach sa Ghaeilge agus sa
stair- He got a degree in Irish and History
Chaith sé a saol ag obair mar mhúinteoir
agus mar phríomhoide- He has spent his life
working as a teacher and principal


Is é an choimhlint idir lánúineacha posta
téama an dáin seo- Conflict between a
married couple is the main theme of this
poem
Ní raibh na lánúineacha seo oiriúnach dá
chéile mar bhí mianta difriúla acu- This
couple weren’t suitable for each other
because they had different wishes




Tá a lán íomhánna éagsúla sa dán seo- There
are a lot of different images in this poem.
Tugtar íomhá don fear agus don bhean
dúinn- We are given an image of the man and
the woman
An Fear
Duine traidisiúnta seanfhaiseanta atá annHe’s an old fashioned, traditional person


Posadh traidisiúnta a bhí uaidh- He wanted a
traditional marriage
Ba mhaith leis a bheith ina chonaí ina
cheantar dúchais agus go mbeadh an bhean
sa bhaile agh tabhairt aire do na páistí- He
wanted to live in his native area and that the
wife stayed at home minding the children


Bhí a mhianta go leor diríthe ar an dteach
agus an clann- All his wishes were about the
house and family.
Bhí an smaoineamh a bhí aige den phosadh
níos tabhactaí ná a bheith leis an bhean a
phos sé- The idea that he had about the
marriage was more important than the
woman




An Bhean
Is bean neamhspleách nua-aimseartha íShe’s a modern, independent woman
Ní raibh sí sásta ag brath ar a fear chéile chun
í a chothu- She wasn’t happy depending on
her husband to provide for her
Theastaigh uaithi a roghanna féin a
dhéanamh- She wanted to make her own
decisions


Bhí mianta na mná dírithe ar rudaí taobh
amuigh den bhaile, leathanta saoire,
saibhreas agus stádas- The womans wishes
are for things outside of the home, like
holidays, wealth and status.
Cosúil leis an bhfear, bhí an smaoineamh den
phósadh níos tabhactactaí ná a bheith leis an
bhfear a phos sí- Like the man, the idea of
getting married was more important than
being with the man she married



Faighimid léiriú diúltach sa dán ar an bpósadh
agus ar na deacrachtaí a bhíonn ag roinnt
lánúineacha pósta- We get a negative insight into
the marriage and difficulties that married couples
can have.
Bhí mianta difriúla ag an bhfear agus an bheanThe man and woman had different wishes
Ní raibh siad ábalta teacht ar comhréiteach agus
mar sin d’fhág siad a chéile- They weren’t able to
come to a compromise and because of that they
broke up



Baineann an file úsáid éifeachtach chliste as
meafair sa dán seo- The poet makes clever
use of metaphors in this poem.
Tá an meafair a bhaineann leis an bhfear
tíriúil teolaí agus séimh- The metaphor
associated with the man is homely, warm and
gentle.
Shamhlaigh sé clann agus bean taobh istigh
dá mballaí féin, iad sásta le chéile- He
imagined himself and the wife within his own
home and being happy together.



Tá an meafair a bhaineann leis an mbean níos
fuaire agus beagán crua- The metaphor
associated with the woman is colder and a bit
cruel
Tá sé intuigthe uaidh seo go bhfuil saibhreas
agus ábharachas tábhactach don bhean seo- It is
implied that materialism and wealth are
important to the woman
Tá an meafair diríthe ar mhianta na mná féin, níl
aon chaint faoi chlann, faoi éinne ach fúithi féinThe metaphor is based on what the woman
wants, there is no talk of family, or anybody else
but herself



Tá díomá, doilíos agus míshonas le brath sa
dán seo- Disappointment, sorrow and
unhappiness can be felt in this poem.
Theastaigh grá agus sonas ón mbeirt acuThey both wanted love and happiness
Níl móran cainte faoi grá sa dán seo, tá
móran cainte faoi mhainta na beirte- There
isn’t a lot of talk about love in this poem,
there is more talk about what they want.


Tá codarsnacht láidir sa dán idir mianta na
beirte- There is a strong contrast between
the wishes of the man and woman
Tá codarsnacht idir an saol traidisiúnta agus
an saol nua- aimseartha freisin- There is also
a contrast between the traditional life and the
more modern life.


Baineann an file úsáid as friotal simplí,
dúchasach, gonta sa dán- The poet uses
simple, native, concise language in the poem.
Sa chéad véarsa úsáideann an file focail a
chruthaíonn pictiúr den duine tradisiúnta
agus sa dara véarsa cruthaíonn sé pictiúr den
duine nua-aimseartha- In the first verse the
poet uses words that create a picture of a
traditional person and in the second verse, he
uses words that create a modern person
