Quick THON History • Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon • Started by Penn State IFC in 1973 – Held in White Building – Lasted 30 hours – Raised over $2,000 • Joined with Four Diamonds Fund in 1977 – Story by Chris Millard, who died from cancer at 14 – Courage, Wisdom, Honesty, Strength – Covers expenses for children fighting cancer • Moved into Rec Hall, and eventually to BJC in 2007 • Now: 46 hours, 708 dancers, raising… THON Today • Raised over $12,000,000 in 2013 – Since 1977, over $101 MILLION have been raised benefiting the Four Diamonds Fund • Largest student run philanthropy in the world • More than 15,000 students involved • Helped to build new Children’s Wing at Hershey AED THON • Section all 46 hours • Canning • FT5K • THONvelopes • Canvassing • Socials + family visits THON Committee Requirements • Fall – – – – 2 canning trips 25 THONvelopes Attendance at 75% of THON meetings/socials Torres Family Point • Spring – – – – THON section on THON weekend (16 hours/4 shifts) Kids/Dancer Mail Attendance at 75% of THON meetings/socials Torres Family Point THON Fundraising • Please know that although THON fundraising is highly encouraged, it is entirely voluntary. • If you feel uncomfortable at anytime, please bring it to the attention of one of the officers. • It is our wish that you enjoy being in AED and don’t feel forced to do anything. • Alternative options are available – please just contact one of us!
