• AFL – One of the most important labor unions in U.S. History
– Worked for “Bread and Butter” issues – higher wages,
safer working conditions, 40 hour work week
– One of the biggest unions ever – joined Congress of
Industrial workers to form AFL-CIO
• Samuel Gompers
– One of the first leaders of the AFL
– His popularity and success helped AFL grow in numbers
– Stayed away for politics and concentrated on worker
rights
