2 Sustainability and packaging
• Brundtland Commission of the United Nations on March 20, 1987:
• “sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the
present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet
their own needs.”
• How does this relate to packaging?
• Meets the needs of the present:
- Packaging contains, protects, preserves, transports, informs, and sells food and
other essential products.
- Packaging in modern society is fully integrated into business, institutional,
industrial, and personal use.
• Without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their
own needs:
- Efficient use of the earths resources
- Enabling distribution of food and other goods for a thriving planet

• Low weight and volume as waste (2-10gr to pack
volume of 1 liter)
• Attractive display effect through printing/visual
effects and texture
• Long shelf life through extruded or laminated
barrier layer
• Protection of goods (puncture/impact resistant)
• Processing in package up to 135 deg C
• Low temp storage conditions from – 80 deg C
• Sealable, Peelable and Reclosable
• Combination of many functional layers
