Class of 2018 The course guide CTE Video This powerpoint Go to www.friscoisd.org/centennial Remember in 8th grade, you made a four year plan. This is where these classes on your card originated. Some of these classes will need to change. To make a change, draw a line through the course and write in the new choice to the side. You must have 8 periods to have a full schedule. You may need to add or subtract classes from your card to get to 8. Not all courses in the course guide are offered at every FISD high school. Look on the back of your schedule card to see what courses you can take as a 10th grader at CHS. Look on the back of your card. If the course has a * by it, this class meets for one semester only. Place it in one box on your card and choose another * class to go with it. Together these 2 classes make up 1.0 credits. If it does not have a *, it meets all year. A few CTE Center classes are open to 10th graders. Classes taught at CTE are in bold on the back of the card. Transportation is provided. CTE classes start earlier than CHS and end later. CTE Pathways are located in the course guide, and a handout is available in the counseling office. Check for Prerequisites- You must plan your classes now to include the pre-req in order to take the higher level classes there later on. PLAN BACKWARDS! Look at the class you’d like to take your senior year and work backwards to see what you need to take to get there. Some classes at the CTE center are double blocked. These courses are highlighted in gray on the back of your card. If you sign up for one of these classes, you must write it in 2 boxes on your card. Plan Carefully Again, some classes have pre-requisites. Consult the course guide and plan your schedule carefully. Examples of pre-requisites: You must take DGA before you can take Animation. You must take Intro to Culinary before you can take Culinary Arts 1. This is very important for CTE classes! Pay Attention to what you must first take in order to get to your ultimate goal! All PAP and AP students must complete the entire first 6 weeks before a drop to regular will be considered. At the end of the 6 weeks, if you still wish to drop, we will have a meeting with you, your teacher, and your parents to discuss. The grade you earn in the PAP or AP class at the end of the 6 weeks will be on your report card and follow you to the new class. •Color Guard •Athletics •Band •Dance or Dance Team •Cheerleading •Athletic Trainer •PE You need to take one year of a PE to graduate! We hire staff and order textbooks in the spring based on YOUR choices for electives. You will not be allowed to drop an elective you choose next August when school starts. The first two weeks of each semester, the only reason for a schedule change is for a program change. Programs include things like athletics, band, colorguard, etc. All program changes must be completed by the end of week 2. Do you have these on your card? English 2 Math class Science class World History If you see Math Models on your card, it has been recommended by your math teacher. This DOES count as one of your 4 math credits. Your science will be either chemistry or IPC (Integrated Physics and Chemistry). The selection you have is based on your current math performance. IPC DOES count as one of your 4 sciences. Do you participate in athletics? Is your sport printed on your card? If not, make the change now. Your sport takes up 2 “places” on your card. You should see it on your card twice. If you are going to add a sport to your schedule, make sure you write the name of your sport (football, soccer, volleyball, etc), not the word “athletics.” If you are in one of the top bands, band takes up two spots on your card. Your card should show Band Master and Instrumental Band Master. If you are in a lower band, it will only take up only one spot on your card. It is single blocked. Your card should show Band Master only. Make the change on your card now to reflect the number of band periods you are in this year. Tryouts happen in May, and we will change you then if needed. If you are unsure on how to complete your card, see your band director for help. For choir and orchestra your card should read ◦ Orchestra Master 1 ◦ Choir Master 1 ◦ ◦ Please change your card to this if you are in these fine arts, and it reads something else. Be sure foreign language is on your card if you have not completed 2 consecutive years of the same language. If you are in level 1 now, choose level 2 for next year. 2 consecutive years are required for graduation. While not mandatory, competitive colleges like to see 3 years of the same language! If you have not yet taken a foreign language, add it now. ◦ Choose from: Spanish, French, American Sign Language, Chinese (online) Complete the alternate boxes on the card. These will be used if your first choice does not work. List your alternates in order of preference. Pick some one semester backups and some year-long backups. We will pick these FOR YOU if you don’t! You might not like what we pick, AND YOU WILL BE UNABLE TO CHANGE THEM! Please locate the box that talks about the policy regarding schedule changes. Please read the statement and initial that box now. You have one week to get your parent signature and complete your choices. On February 9th and 10th you will need to bring your completed card to ENGLISH class. You will be meeting with your counselor that day and turning in your card. If you do not turn in a card, we will pick your classes for you, and you can’t change them. Make sure to get a parent to sign off on your choices before turning it in.
