 Atomic Theory
All matter is composed of extremely small particles called
atoms. There are different kinds called elements.
Atoms of the same element are identical in size, mass, and
other properties; atoms of different elements differ in size,
mass, and other properties.
Atoms cannot be subdivided, created, or destroyed.
Atoms of different elements combine in simple, whole
number ratios to form chemical compounds.
In chemical reactions, atoms are combined, separated, or
rearranged but never destroyed/created.
Law of Conservation of Mass
 Total mass present before chemical reaction is same as
mass after chemical reaction
 2H2O  2H2 + O2 If you have 10 grams of water to start, you
will get 1.12 g of hydrogen and 8.88 g of oxygen
Law of Constant Composition (definite proportions)

The electron

Much of what has been learned about atomic
structure has come from observing the
interaction of visible light and matter.

De Broglie suggested that electrons have
wave properties to account for why their energy

felt that the electron would best be
represented as a standing wave.
