DuBois, PhD, is a Professor in Community Health Sciences within the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His research examines the contribution of protective factors, particularly self-esteem and mentoring relationships, to resilience and holistic positive development and on translating knowledge in this area to the design of effective youth programs. Dr. DuBois is lead co-editor of the first and second editions of the Handbook of Youth Mentoring (2005; 2013) and co-author of After-School Centers and Youth Development: Case Studies of Success and Failure (Cambridge University Press, 2012). He consults widely to mentoring programs nationally and internationally. Michael Karcher, EdD, PhD Michael J. Karcher, Ed.D., Ph.D., is a Professor of Counseling at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he coordinates the School Counselor Training Program. He conducts research on school-based and cross-age peer mentoring as well as on adolescent connectedness and pair counseling. He authored the Cross-age Mentoring Program (CAMP) and conducted one of the first large-scale school-based mentoring studies, the Study of Mentoring in the Learning Environment (SMILE, 2003-2006). Professor Karcher is co-editor of the first and second editions of the Handbook of Youth Mentoring (2005; 2013) and co-edited with Michael Nakkula, Play, talk, learn: Promising practices in youth mentoring (2010).
