Desktop Printing -Wireless
• WPA encrypted wireless router
• NOT CONNECTED TO INTERNET
• 1 network printer and 1 shared printer located
together or in different areas
• Network printer driver and shared printer driver
installed on all computers normally at the site
• EFCs use printer of choice
• Substitute EFCs
– Connect to network wirelessly or via cable
– Add network printer, if necessary, or use shared
printer

Unsecured Wireless
• Acceptable for connection to TWO server
because all transmitted data is encrypted,
including the PDF of the return to be printed
• Data transmitted to a network printer or
shared printer is not encrypted and should not
be sent over an unsecured wireless path
• When using unsecured wireless, printing is
permitted only to a printer connected to the
computer via cable
October 26, 2010
New Jersey Tax-Aide
13
Unsecured Wireless TWO Network
• ERO or Quality Review computer with USB
printer attached
– Can print all returns for this EFIN
• Network printers prohibited
• The driver for this printer must not be
designated “Shared Printer”

Wireless Printing Security Policy
A router will be used for wireless printer sharing and all the following steps
are recommended to configure and secure a wireless router when used
with an AARP Tax-Aide network for printer sharing:
1. Infrastructure network configuration will be used. Ad-Hoc networks are not
permitted.
2. The wireless router or access point will be protected by changing the default
username and adding a password.
3. The manufacturer’s default SSID will be changed to "TAV" (without quotes).
4. WPA encryption will be used.
5. MAC address filtering is optional and adds extra security when used in
conjunction with WPA.
6. A wireless network will never be connected such as to allow connection to the
Internet while using wireless networking for printer sharing.
7. High power antennae and/or other signal boosters will not be used.
8. File sharing will be turned off.

Wireless Router Setup
• Change default user name and add password
• SSID: TAV
• WPA encryption
October 26, 2010

17
Computers
• Operating systems
– XP, Vista, Windows-7; 32 and 64 bit
– Later versions generally network better
• Firewalls: Windows firewall is recommended
• Wireless configuration
– Older AARP computers may not support WPA
– Install settings using a flash drive
• For obstinate computers , connect to wireless
router with Ethernet cable

Network Configuration Questions
Are these configurations acceptable? Why?
1. Wired network for Desktop printing
connected to the internet
2. Laptop connected to TWO via library
unencrypted wireless network printing to
HP1102w in the wireless mode
3. ERO checking for TWO acknowledgements
from an Internet Explorer equipped smart
phone at Starbucks

Wireless Security Questions
• What encryption type is required on Tax-Aide
wireless networks?
• The login for the TAV wireless router’s web
server is: user – admin, password – password
• If I am not able to configure a personal
computer for access to the wireless network,
what are my options?

• Model name allows one driver to print to all units of that model

30
IP Address at Install
• The driver will print to any unit of that model at
the IP address of the printer when the driver was
installed
• If the printer is assigned a different IP address, a
new driver must be installed
• A driver that worked yesterday may not work
today
• A driver that worked at site 1 may not work at
site 2
• Reserving an IP address in the router enables one
driver for each printer model
October 26, 2010
New Jersey Tax-Aide
31
Individual Name
• The driver will print to this unit regardless of
IP address
• If the IP address is different tomorrow, the
driver will find the printer and print to it
• A different driver is required for each unit of
this model. The printers at site 1 and site 2
each require their own driver – not a big deal
if there are only 1 or 2, but with more?
October 26, 2010
New Jersey Tax-Aide
32
Model Name
• Changing the [Host]name of each unit to the
model name enables the driver to print to all
units of this model regardless of IP address
• If the IP address of a printer is different
tomorrow, the driver will find it and print to it
• The driver will print to the same model
printers at site 1 and site 2 regardless of IP
address

Network Printer with
Reserved Address
• Use Address Reservation in router to always
assign the same IP address to this printer
– HP 1022n: 192.168.1.51
– HP 1505n: 192.168.1.50
• Assignment of IP address is by printer MAC so
printer and router must be operated as a pair
• A computer with a 1505n-50 driver can print
to a different 1505n on another network if the
printer has IP address 192.168.1.50
October 26, 2010

• Options
1. Assign asset tags, include routers on district
inventory and list in equipment table

inventory and equipment table
3. Leave asset tags on existing routers but exclude
from new routers. Exclude routers from district

Network Printer Questions
• Two printers of the same model with the same
Host name are placed on the same network.
What happens when a computer tries to
print?
• I have 3 printers of the same model at
different sites in my district. To print to each
in the network mode, how many drivers will I
need on my computer if the printers are all HP
1022n? HP 1606dn?

Wireless Printing Questions
The HP 1102w and Brother 5370dw in their
wireless modes
• May be used for Desktop printing
• May be used for TWO printing on a public
wireless network at a library
• May be used to print returns on a TWO wired
network
October 26, 2010

42
Recommendations
• District with experience in network printing
– Use Reserved IP Address for HP 1022n & 1505n
– For other printers
• Use Reserved IP Address or
• If or than 1 unit of same model, Model name
• Individual name [default] is least preferred
– If using TWO, consider changing router address
space to 172.27.1.*
October 26, 2010
New Jersey Tax-Aide
43
Recommendations
• District with little or no experience in network
printing
– Use Reserved IP Address for HP 1022n & 1505n
– For other printers
• Use Individual name [default] if 1 to 3 units of same
model
• If >3 units of same model use Reserved IP Address or
Model name
– If using TWO, consider changing router address
space to 172.27.1.*
