Tips for success
A quick timeline overview
• Non-fiction book reports are due by 3:00
p.m. on Friday, 11/9.
• Papers must be turned in both in hard copy
AND electronically on turnitin.com.
•
Strive to have your book completely read by
11/1. Start working on your rough draft during
that weekend.
•
We will have a significant chunk of in-class time
available during the week of 11/5 to work on
your final draft AND the PowerPoint for your
book talk.
•
Lots of teacher assistance will be available, so
please take advantage of this opportunity.
Your book should be a non-fiction book with a minimum of
200 pages. Check the call number to make sure your book

the book. If it
looks like this,
then it is a fiction
book so it
doesn’t qualify
for this
assignment.
Your reaction paper needs to include a brief 2-3 paragraph
summary
Your paper needs to incorporate an outside source.
Here are some ideas:
• On-line book review (i.e. The New York Times)
• Add some facts that further illustrate a topic
within the book.
• Do some research about the author.
• Are there any links to something you have studied
in school?
Remember, you must cite your source.
This is an excellent example of a student incorporating
information about the author into the paper.
You need to select a quote (properly cited) from
the book along with your reaction (1-2
paragraphs).
The paper must include your recommendation of whether this book is
worth reading.
• Who would enjoy this book?
• You need a specific detail from the book that backs up your recommendation.
One paragraph with your reaction to things the
author didn’t cover, but you wish had been
included.
.
• Read your book sooner rather than later.
• Seek help and ask questions if you are unsure
about part of the assignment.
• Have your rough draft done before 11/5.
