Merrill’s First Principles of Instruction
• A set of basic instructional principles
• “in spite of the diversity represented the various
instructional theories and models, the underlying
principles for all of those theories are
fundamentally the same” (Merrill, 2009, p. 55)
• The effectiveness, efficiency, and engagement of
an instructional practice are a function of the
degree to which these principles are
implemented.

Problem-centered: Learning is promoted when
learners are engaged in solving real-world
problems.
Activation: Learning is promoted when existing
knowledge is activated as a foundation for new
knowledge.
Demonstration: Learning is promoted when new
knowledge is demonstrated to the learner.
Application: Learning is promoted when new
knowledge is applied by the learner.
Integration: Learning is promoted when new
knowledge is integrated into the learner’s world.
Problem-centered
• 학생들이 실제적인 문제나 과제를
수행하였는가?
• 단순한 것에서부터 복잡한 것까지 다양한
종류의 실제적인 문제들이 제시되었는가?
• 이 수업에서 수행한 과제나 문제는
학생들의 실생활과 관련이 있는 것이었나?
Activation
• 학생들은 새롭고 익숙하지 않은 아이디어나
지식을 배울 수 있는 활동에 참여했나?

• 동일한 아이디어나 기술을 이해할 수 있는

Research result
• Integrating Merrill’s principles in a course is
associated with quality instruction, student
satisfaction, student learning, and learning
time (Frick et al., 2010).
