The 40tude London
Stand Up Paddleboarding (SUP)
Marathon 2014
Saturday 14th June 2014
Join 40tude’s 2014 SUP Marathon on the River Thames!
The London SUP Marathon is a long distance – approximately 26 mile – mass
paddle on the Thames which is taking place on Saturday 14th June 2014,
starting at Shepperton and finishing at Putney. The course combines tidal
and non-tidal sections of the river passing through three locks and under 14
bridges while taking in some of the River’s most picturesque sights, including
Hampton Court, Syon House, Kew Gardens, Ham House and Richmond Hill.
What is SUP?
Stand Up Paddleboarding, or ‘SUP’ as it has become known, has been evolving
rapidly over the last few years and is now the fastest growing water sport
worldwide. All you need is a board (similar to a surfboard but more stable)
and a paddle. These can be hired from the event organiser – Active360. To
SUP, you simply stand on the board and paddle! It’s easy to learn the basics
and most people can stand and paddle in a straight line within 30 minutes of
starting. Paddleboarding is recognised as a great way to stay in shape – it
gives you a total body workout strengthening all your core muscles. Training
for this event consists of a rigorous programme of varied exercise and time
spent on the board learning technique and safety.
Any profits and all funds raised through this event will be directed to:
St Mark’s Hospital Foundation, registered UK charity number: 1140930
It’s back again for a second year – 40tude’s ‘marathon with a difference’!

Interested in signing up to the 40tude London SUP Marathon?
Then contact [email protected] to request a registration form. Your place
will be secure once you have returned your completed registration form and
paid the entry fees. Please do register quickly as this event is already
attracting a high level of interest and we have limited capacity. If you wish to
try out SUP before committing to the marathon, then do please come along to
one of our group or 1-to-1 training sessions (see below).
Our event safety standards require that all participants must have completed
a minimum of three hours ‘coached’ training on the Thames prior to
completing the 40tude London SUP Marathon – although some participants
may require longer to feel comfortable enough to tackle a 26-mile challenge.
People who have registered, but have not completed the minimum training
prior to Monday 2nd June 2014 will not be allowed to participate in the event
and will not be eligible for a refund of their entry fees. (Any profits made from
the event will be donated to St Mark’s Hospital Foundation.)
There will be plenty of opportunities to join in Active360 training sessions
throughout the Spring and to hire boards. All participants will get a discount
on an Active360 SUP Boarding Pass which gives substantial discounts on
equipment hire. We will advise you of the training schedule, costs and
booking details as soon as they are available. If you have already trained in
SUP, then please contact Paul Hyman at Active360 to discuss your experience.
Places may be available for experienced paddleboarders to act as event
marshals. You will find Paul’s contact details below.

Fundraising and Sponsorship
All fundraising, sponsorship and any profits generated from the event will be
channeled, via 40tude curing colon cancer, to the St. Mark’s Hospital
Foundation and from there into 40tude sponsored projects. We fully
recognise that some people are more able to raise sponsorship than others
for all sorts of reasons. We will help you to set up a 40tude charity giving
page and provide you with lots of encouragement to raise funds for this
important cause – but we will never put you under pressure.
We respectfully ask that all money raised goes to support 40tude’s work with
St Mark’s Hospital Foundation. If you wish to raise funds for an alternative
colon cancer cause, then please call us to discuss this further.
This event offers a unique brand exposure opportunity to potential sponsors.

40tude is a rapidly expanding ‘family’ of fundraisers who are taking action
against the second biggest cancer killer in the Western world – colon cancer.
40tude runs a series of ‘challenges’ each year that provide a fundraising
focus. Many of the participants in 40tude events have had friends and family
who have suffered from colon cancer and therefore have deep connections to
the cause. Television presenter Chris Evans is 40tude’s patron.
