The master thesis project
- an integrated part of your master program

Different subject matters – track-dependent, or not...
30 credits – nominally 5 months fulltime
You can start anytime, but...
You need to register
There is an examiner
Grades A-F
• Check:
Conditions for registration = starting the project
Find a project
Get/write a brief project plan (1-3 pages)
Contact an examiner (before making any formal
commitments!)

Master thesis 30 credits
- Meet the requirements
In order to begin the thesis!
•
Students studying in an engineering program at SCI:
civil.ing. program requirements:
-At least 240 credits completed
-Max 2 unfinished compulsory courses from Years 1-3
•
Students studying in an engineering program at another
school at KTH
- check with your student counselor at your civil.ing.program
•
International students,
the requirement is 60 credits
•
The master program requirements

The Project
• A project task
that you need to find
that you need to plan, execute and present
(both written thesis and oral presentation/"defense")
that is technically supervised where it is performed
that you need to settle, with the client/employer and with
the examiner
• An opportunity
to learn, deepen skills and gain experience
to specialise
to get acquainted with a company or a field
to do academic research
to travel
to get employed (!)
8
Finding & choosing a project
•
In which area (subject matter)?
– Should (typically) be a part of
your track or the master core.
•
Where?
– At a company
– At an institute, agency or authority
– At KTH
– Mixed
• Sometimes a company asks KTH to run a project on commission
– Abroad
• In industry or in academia
• Even more important to assure that everybody involved agree
9
People involved
•
You
– Find the project & do the work
•
Supervisor
– Acts as your daily help, coach and support
– Should be technically skilled !!!
– Academic and in industry
•
Examiner :
– Can be almost any teacher in the subject. (You choose who to ask.)
– Accepts the project plan as thesis project (by signing your course reg.)
– Accept the report and presentation at the end.
– Grade the work.
– Can act as extra support if needed…
•
Student Administration Office
– Checks that you meet the requirements to register.
– Makes the formal registration
•
A peer:
– Thesis projects can be done in pairs if the work is clearly divided.
10
Application and Agreement
• Fill in the form which is
available on the website.
• Must be signed by the
examiner and supervisor
 submitted to the Student
Administration Office
• Registration for studies
every semester
 My Pages / Mina Sidor

Thesis abroad
You must have an examiner at KTH, but you are free to
do your project outside of Sweden.
• Contact a company/university yourself
• Ask your department for ideas and contacts
• Scholarship programs: ex. Erasmus Internships, MFS
IMPORTANT
• Remember to keep in contact with your examiner,
regularly
• It can be more difficult to do thesis abroad due to the
distance
