SCHOOLS TENNIS WITHIN
JUNIOR TENNIS
• THIS IS OFTEN CONFUSING
• SCHOOLS BODIES AND PROVINCIAL SPORT & REC SEES
SCHOOL SPORT AS SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND ABOVE
NATIONAL JUNIOR TENNIS
• IN FACT SCHOOLS TENNIS IS A LIMITED VERSION OF TENNIS
AND IS FOCUSSED AS A SCHOOLS SPORT ALONGSIDE OTHER
SCHOOLS SPORTS AND ALSO WITHIN THE CONSTRAINTS OF
THE SCHOOL ACTIVITIES
• JUNIOR TENNIS HAS A MUCH WIDER SCOPE, HOWEVER
SHARE THE SAME PLAYERS
• IT IS THEREFORE NATURAL THAT FROM TIME TO TIME
FRICTION BETWEEN SCHOOLS TENNIS AND JUNIOR TENNIS
WILL OCCUR
• WHERE RUGBY, CRICKET, NETBALL, SOCCER ETC. ON A
JUNIOR LEVEL CAN ONLY BE PLAYED ON A SCHOOLS LEVEL
TENNIS IS VERY DIFFERENT IN THAT IT ONLY REQUIRES ONE
OTHER PERSON AND CAN BE PLAYED ANYWHERE

SCHOOL TENNIS STRUCTURES ARE GENERALLY VERY WEAK,
FINDING SUFFICIENT TEACHING STAFF TO SERVE ON TENNIS
STRUCTURES A CHALLENGE
THE OUTCOME IS THAT IT TENDS TO ONLY SURFACE AROUND
EVENTS (LEAGUES & TOURNAMENTS) AND THEN WHOM EVER
IS PREPARED TO DO IT
IN ORDER TO HAVE SUCCESS EACH AREA WILL HAVE TO BE
TREATED INDIVIDUALLY IN ORDER TO FIND THE BEST WAY TO
ACHIEVE DEMOCRATIC ALLY ELECTED STRUCTURES FILLED
MAINLY BY TEACHERS
THESE BODIES ARE CATERED FOR ON EACH OF THE SATA
PROVINCIAL EXECUTIVES
SATA IN PROCESS OF FINALISING NATIONAL PRIMARY AND
HIGH SCHOOL STRUCTURES
SATA HAS UNDERTAKEN TO CREATE A BOARD POSITION FOR
SCHOOLS TENNIS AS SOON AS PROVINCIAL AND NATIONAL
STRUCTURES ARE PROPERLY IN PLACE
PROGAMMES
TOGETHER WITH THE NATIONAL SCHOOLS BODY WORK ON
PROGRAMMES TO PROMOTE POPULARISE TENNIS IN
SCHOOLS. THESE WOULD INCLUDE:
– WAYS TO IMPROVE AND POPULARISE SCHOOLS
LEAGUES
– INNOVATIVE WAYS OF INTRODUCING TENNIS INTO
SCHOOLS AND THE SCHOOLS CARRICULUM (PLAY &
STAY & TENNIS10’S)
– THROUGH THIS BRING LEAGUE TENNIS TO THOSE
CURRENTLY EXCLUDED FROM LEAGUES & STRUCTURE
SOCIAL TENNIS MORE EFFECTIVELY
– HIGHLIGHT ACHIEVEMENTS IN SCHOOLS LEAGUES
– ENHANCE SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS & NATIONAL
SCHOOLS CHAMPIONSHIPS THROUGH INCREASING
KNOWLEDGE
– INTER REGIONAL COMPETITIONS
PROGRAMMES CONTINUED
– ESTABLISHMENT OF A NATIONAL INTER-SCHOOLS
COMPETITION
– INTERGRATE AND COORDINATE SCHOOLS ACTIVITIES
INTO NATIONAL JUNIOR CALENDAR
– IMPROVE THE NATIONAL SCHOOLS INTER PROVINCIAL
THROUGH PROVINCIAL/NATIONAL ASSISTANCE
– ASSIST WITH PUBLISHING AND PUBLISIZING
ACHIEVEMENTS IN SCHOOLS TENNIS
– ASSIST WITH FINDING SUITABLE INTERNATIONAL
SCHOOLS OPPORTUNITIES
– RAISE THE PROFILE OF TENNIS AT SCHOOLS
– ENGAGE DoE & PROVINCIAL SPORT & REC TO HELP
SUSTAIN DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMMES AT GRASS

DIFFERENT LEAGUES AND COMPETITION
• AT LOWEST LEVEL WILL ENABLE LEAGUES WHERE
THERE ARE NO COURTS
Tennis is easy…if you
use the right ball!

NATIONAL AND PROVINCIAL
&GOVERNMENT
ENGAGE BOTH TO –
• FIND WHO ARE THE ROLE PLAYERS AT NATIONAL AND
PROVINCIAL GOVERNMENT AND ENGAGE TO WORK
TOGETHER
• UNDERSTAND WHAT DIFFERENTIATES TENNIS FROM OTHER
SPORTS – WHAT MAKES TENNIS UNIQUE
• EXPLAIN WHY A MULTI-CODED AND TOP DOWN APPROACH
TO THE ESTABLISHMENT OF SPORTING BODIES,
DEMARCATIONS AND COMPETITIONS WILL ULTIMATELY FAIL
• ACCEPT THE TENNIS STRUCTURES AS THE CUSTODIANS OF
THE SPORT AND NOT BODIES THAT NEED TO BE
PRESCRIBED TO. LETS FIRST MEET AND DISCUSS AND FIND
THE ROAD FORWARD RTOGETHER
• SEEK ADMINISTRATIVE ASSISTANCE FOR PROVINCIAL
SCHOOL SPORT STRUCTURES.
• SATA TO EMPLOY SOMEONE WITH SPECIFIC SCHOOLS
PORTFOLIO.
